A black blazer is the fastest upgrade in a wardrobe because it changes the outline, not just the color. Put it over anything soft and the whole look stops reading as casual by accident.

The trick is to stop treating it as office wear. Wear it with the things you would wear anyway, and let the jacket supply the edge.

Three ways in

Over a tee and dark denim. The plainest version and the most useful. Push the sleeves a little, leave the jacket open, and keep the tee close to the body so the shoulder line stays clean.

Over a satin shirt for the evening. Sheen under matte black is the oldest trick in the book because it works. Open the collar one button further than you would by day.

Black on black. Blazer, black knit, black trouser, one silver accent. Texture carries the outfit when color does not.

Fit before anything

The seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, not past it and not short of it. Sleeves can be shortened; shoulders cannot be fixed. If you are between sizes, choose the one that fits at the shoulder and tailor the rest.

Worn open, the fronts should hang straight without pulling. Buttoned, there should be no X-shaped creases around the button. If there are, go up a size.

Before you order

  1. Read the size chart against a jacket you already own, measured flat across the shoulders.
  2. Confirm the color swatch: blacks vary, and listings often offer several shades.
  3. Check the return window before you order, so fit can be judged at home.
