A satin button-down does the work of two shirts. Under a jacket it reads as evening; with denim and flat shoes it reads as an easy weekend piece that happens to catch the light.

The point is contrast. Satin looks richest next to matte things: wool, denim, a plain knit, black leather.

Three ways to wear it

Buttoned to the top, tucked into a high-waisted trouser. Severe, clean, and the strongest look for the evening.

Open at the neck under a blazer, with a chain on skin. The default night-out uniform, and hard to get wrong.

Unbuttoned over a fitted tee with the sleeves pushed up. The daytime version: relaxed, still sharper than a plain overshirt.

Keep the sheen working

One shiny piece per outfit is usually enough. Pair it with a satin skirt or a patent shoe and the effect turns from sharp to costume.

Follow the care label. Satin snags and creases more than cotton, so hang it rather than folding it, and steam out wrinkles instead of ironing hard and hot.
